The Greatest Secret Of Psychiatry: The Endorphins
ALEN J Salerian  MD
April 7, 2015

To observe that the endorphins are the most influential chemicals of  brain transmission  will not be an overstatement.
There are many important chemicals dopamine serotonin norepinephrine, glutamate  acetyl choline GABA etc but none of them enjoys the unique properties of endorphins for brain function.
Brain function is teamwork and no chemical can by itself dictate intellectual and emotional performance . It is also true that not all chemicals are of equal importance and or influence.
What does distinguish endorphins from other neurotransmitters?
Their dual and paradoxical influence  to enhance and inhibit  intellectual and emotional function. In the limbic brain region they counteract dopamine activation and thus show calming effect and combat anxiety and worry. Just the opposite happens in  prefrontal cortex by activating dopamine and contributing to improved concentration mood and cognition.
This dual paradoxical effect  is consistent with natural observations: the benefits of exercise. The popular runners high seems to be the outcome of suppressing limbic anxiety and enhancing prefrontal cortex joy and concentration by intense exercise inducing greater endorphin production.
One of the reasons we have not fully benefited  from our knowledge about endorphins is misinformation rooted in prejudice and ignorance.
It does not help that our laws  and scientific knowledge are not always friends.
In America DEA is in charge of neuroscience and what NIH could say or do. The end result is even the most fantastic discoveries in neuroscience must be first cleared by a policeman. This is not an exaggeration this is a simple fact of life in America in 2015.
We may be waiting for long time for endorphins to be properly studied and introduced into combating psychiatric disorders. Of course this will all depend on doctors educating the rest of the country of the unique properties of endorphins.

Collateral Damage Of War On Drugs: Kids
Alen J Salerian MD

It is a sad reality that 20,000 doctors have been imprisoned because of the war on drugs in the last 10 years. It is equally unnerving that children have been victimized as collateral damage as well.
I have DNA like evidence to assert that dozens of my innocent pain patients from Southwest Virginia have been falsely arrested and imprisoned allegedly for minor traffic violations.
Local police armed with instant data of drivers medication history would target patients taking prescription pain medications or other controlled substances. Following a routine sham traffic violation an illegal search would lead to discovery of controlled substances and more…. Systematic profiling would ship the unsuspecting drivers to a few nights in a local prison before thousands  spent for legal fees before exoneration. 18 of my patients were victimized by this illegal bait and switch strategy.
The system seems to be money driven supported by high intensity drug trafficking area( HIDTA) funds from our tax dollars.
2 out of 18  of  my patients because they were imprisoned for long periods and both had for several months lost  the custody of their children based upon trumped up charges. So it's not only doctors and patients  who suffer because of archaic laws and deceptive law reinforcement but children also become collateral damage.

Good news is an NIH report on pain management is out and there is hope that NIH will educate DEA.

    NIH CALL DEA 911
          Alen J  Salerian MD

NIH recommendations for treating pain just got published. They are not very different than the 2012 recommendations by Institute of medicine . some  110 million people with chronic pain and gross undertreatment of pain.
I suggest  NIH people  call CDC .and DEA.
CDC has been broadcasting a false alarm of an epidemic of prescription pain medication overdose deaths and  DEA has  an ongoing war on pain doctors. DEA agents have been authorized to take take down pain doctors-20,000 of them in the last 10 years-
How do I know. I'm one of them. Without a trial, four years ago DEA agents raided my home and office confiscated my wealth shutdown my office and forced me  to bankruptcy. DEA agents are still laughing and driving my cars for joyrides.
Two years ago I got a speeding ticket from local police. DEA had confiscated that car four years ago.
I still wait for my day in court while agents joyride with my cars and wealth.
      NEVER mess with DEA.

My fellow doctors read the NIH and Institute of medicine recommendations. But don't practice them for the sake of your children and families. If you want to help our patients we should all suggest that NIH and Institute of medicine pick up the phone and call DEA directly.
