Collateral Damage Of War On Drugs: Kids
Alen J Salerian MD

It is a sad reality that 20,000 doctors have been imprisoned because of the war on drugs in the last 10 years. It is equally unnerving that children have been victimized as collateral damage as well.
I have DNA like evidence to assert that dozens of my innocent pain patients from Southwest Virginia have been falsely arrested and imprisoned allegedly for minor traffic violations.
Local police armed with instant data of drivers medication history would target patients taking prescription pain medications or other controlled substances. Following a routine sham traffic violation an illegal search would lead to discovery of controlled substances and more…. Systematic profiling would ship the unsuspecting drivers to a few nights in a local prison before thousands  spent for legal fees before exoneration. 18 of my patients were victimized by this illegal bait and switch strategy.
The system seems to be money driven supported by high intensity drug trafficking area( HIDTA) funds from our tax dollars.
2 out of 18  of  my patients because they were imprisoned for long periods and both had for several months lost  the custody of their children based upon trumped up charges. So it's not only doctors and patients  who suffer because of archaic laws and deceptive law reinforcement but children also become collateral damage.

Good news is an NIH report on pain management is out and there is hope that NIH will educate DEA.
