Your brain and you

Most of us realize poorly controlled diabetes may lead to blindness and the same is true for poorly controlled hypertension causing stroke. Complications of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression and pain are equally alarming for untreated anxiety leads to depression poorly controlled depression and pain cause premature death and brain atrophy.

The interesting finding lately has been the discovery that most depressions are complications of other  brain conditions among them diabetes multiple sclerosis chronic pain and amygdala dysfunction. The figure below shows how many different medical conditions may lead to prefrontal cortex dysfunction and depression.
