Is Prozac An
Antidepressant or A Neuro Protector?

Insulin helps
prevent diabetic retinopathy yet it is not classified as an anti-blindness
medicine. This is because in medicine we distinguish a disease and a disease complication, an
obvious deficit of psychiatry.
Is Prozac
or Zoloft an antidepressant?
Not according to
neuroscience :they are serotonergic agents that offer nuro protection of limbic
brain and indirectly activate prefrontal cortex dopamine through this
protective mechanism.
It is different for
Wellbutrin or TMS or sunlight or
Adderall that directly activate prefrontal cortex dopamine. In
essence Welbutrin ,TMS ,Sun LiGHT and
Adderall have the properties to be labeled as antidepressants. This does not mean Zoloft or Prozac or other
SSRIs lack therapeutic benefits to help people
with depression. Scientifically however it makes more sense for them to
be classified as neuro protectors.
When pharmaceutical companies developed antidepressants
we knew very little of regional brain function relative to brain chemistry.
The last two decades
have opened up new ways of thinking about brain medications .
Is FDA ready to
consider a change.?Are doctors ready to
appreciate the crucial importance of
regional brain function in mood disorders?
