Hoarseness Singing Dr Salerian poem Saleri self portrait

Hoarseness Singing

The last time my mama sobbed
Really sobbed
With grape size tears
Flowing down
Through wrinkles
We were at breakfast
And I let her down
When she asked
“ Do I look like a monkey, the one I see in the mirror?”

In her early 90s
To me she was beautiful
But I fumbled
By silence hesitation
Adding perhaps possibly
Sobs and sighs became words and yelps
Hoarseness singing
“What pains me
Not aging
Becoming ugly
Fatness is hard
Harsh is born black or Gypsy
The worst - inhaling silent poison
When you ugly
Really really ugly”
She sang
That's when
We both burst into laughter
Laughing hard embracing each other
After a while

Forgot why we were laughing
