Celebrating Robert McNamara
Alen J Salerian MD

in modern history Robert McNamara will be remembered as a courageous voice of wisdom for acknowledging past errors. He is a rare modern statesman -if not the only one- to admit wrongdoing .
It's easy to say I am sorry after  you get caught . It  takes a real man to be candid about past errors especially if they were as catastrophic as the Vietnam war.
More than 1.5 million Vietnamese died . We lost  50,000 young men for nothing. This was a war Pres. Kennedy did not want.  in fact with  NSAM  276 on October 20, 1963 he did  END  our engagement in Vietnam.
The basics are simple .  Kennedy did not want war ,many others thought war was good :good for economy, good for military-industrial complex and the only way to stop the spread of communism.

Pres. Kennedy made it very clear that he was against any coup d'état in Vietnam. McNamara” In Retrospect” offers evidence of treason by White House Staff Bundy, Harriman, Hillsman and Forrestall .
He is precise in putting the blame on Bundy for the decision to reverse the president's policy on Vietnam at the November 20 Hawaii meeting.
His actions suggest he was not surprised by the assassination. His questionable statements are consistent with McNamara playing the role of a reluctant participant of the coup d'état  led by Bundy and others.

 Questionable statements; source in retrospect

I did not know that JFK was shot about 30 minutes after the fact.
We continued the budget meeting at the Pentagon because we simply did not know what to do..
McNamara was the most important cabinet member in Washington DC. (The great majority of the JFK cabinet were on their way to Japan). Should we believe him?

The anti-DIEM activists(Hillsman Harriman Forestall)  in Washington continued their rearguard action. Unbeknownst to Mac and me Hillsman sent Lodge a letter after reading the presidents instructions to me (the presidential instructions and Hillsman note clashed- treason?).

secret letter to  Amb. Lodge from Hillsman
dear cabot I'm taking advantage of Mike forestalls safe hands to deliver this message. ( treason?)

“I have no specific memory of this conference. But it made a big impression on Mac Bundy. BUNDY Not me was responsible for the decisions made in Hawai(the decision to reverse JFK's orders of withdrawal from Vietnam).
Mc George Bundy never spoke to McNamara  after the publication of  in retrospect.

I'm grateful to McNamara  for his honesty. He can be a role model for many of us especially for other world leaders who made catastrophic errors but would never acknowledge them because they don't have to.

Thank you McNamara rest in peace.
