   What should a psychiatrist or a friend ask a victim of rape, torture, natural or man-made disaster?

  What should a psychiatrist or a friend offer a victim of rape, torture, natural or man-made disaster?

  What should a psychiatrist or a friend not tell a victim of rape, torture, natural or man-made disaster?

   As a psychiatrist who's been victimized by rape, torture, natural or man-made disaster here is what I think:

 1.What can I do to help you?

 2. Do not offer any advice to prevent future mishaps?

 3. Never say good things will come out of it.

   We all learn from pain; helping a person in huge  pain is a different challenge. Unsolicited brilliant insights could be harmful if the timing is wrong .
