Our emotions and brain by Dr. Salerian insights and image

Where Our Feelings Come From: Regional Brain Function

One of the less known discoveries in psychiatry has been  our specific brain regions  endowed with  specific emotional functions. For instance amygdala regulates fear responses, thalamus  regulates pain, hippocampus is in charge of emotional memories and our prefrontal cortex remains the king of all brain regions.
This means your mental health depends on prefrontal cortex: when your prefrontal cortex  influence declines your emotional health declines as well. When your prefrontal cortex function is robust- regardless of what happens to any other brain region- you feel normal .
Interestingly what we often call depression is nothing more than your   sick amygdala stressing your prefrontal cortex and over time through wear and tear your prefrontal cortex getting ill.
Of course there are millions of cells molecules and chemicals involved in this very complex operation but the basic roadmap of brain function remains the same. :We have the Three Musketeers amygdala ,thalamus, hippocampus (rabbit brain)  and prefrontal cortex their boss.  We also have another brain region sub cortex that is primarily involved with our  actions, habits and repetitive behavior (monkey brain).

If you ever seek help  for emotional challenges make sure that your healer is familiar with your monkey and rabbit brain .Regardless of all the diplomas on her wall.
